What equipment do I need to make 3 ingredient naan bread with yogurt (no yeast)?

Stovetop: You will require a stovetop or an induction to make this easy naan recipe with no yeast.

Rolling Pin and Marble Chakla: This is where you will be rolling out the naan. Traditionally, all Indian homes will have this. Marble chakla is always a good choice as they are very durable and don’t move about while you are rolling.

Tawa: To make naan bread with no yeast recipe, we will use basic nonstick tawa. Now, I tried making it in aluminum tawa, but it got stuck, and the result was disappointing. Refrain from using something like this. Instead, I recommend using something that has a durable nonstick coating on top. I know some research says nonstick is harmful. In that case, I recommend an iron tawa like the one here.

Big bowl: I will be using one big bowl to knead and rest my dough in there. I purchased mine from the local ceramic shop. I will always encourage you to buy from them because most of the shopkeepers are not well-versed in how to run a store online. It would be a tiny help to sustain their businesses. I buy a lot of things online, too, but I also make sure that I am supporting our local businesses, too. The bowl link I shared is ceramic and fancy. However, this one is made of stainless steel, lower in price, and durable.

Pastry brush: To spread melted butter, use a pastry brush.

Casserole: To store the naan.

What ingredients do I need to make 3 ingredient naan bread with yogurt (no yeast)?

Refined Flour

Refined flour provides the structure of the dough. The gluten in the flour will make your naan’s structure.

Yogurt

Let’s discuss what we replace in this naan bread recipe without yeast. I was speaking to my sister, and once I explained it to her, she could clearly understand what was happening in the dough. Let me do the same for you. You see, with naan made using yeast, the yeast is providing the rise and that sour typical taste of the naan. Yogurt here provides that typical taste as it is a fermented product. It is also providing the moisture that is required to make the dough, as yogurt consists of about 80-85% water.

Baking powder

The baking powder is replacing the rising power of yeast. The secret to this naan bread no yeast recipe is baking powder. Baking powder can react with moisture and heat and make the naan puff up. It is also why we can skip the fermentation stages, making the process faster.

Salt

I have added salt to flavor the naan a bit. However, salt will also help in strengthening the gluten structures. Gluten is also responsible for making the dough stretch when pulled. Because of added strength from the salt, you will notice that while rolling, you can easily stretch it out.

Butter brush

We are brushing some garlic, coriander, and butter to make a garlic naan recipe with no yeast. The garlic and butter will no doubt elevate this naan to another level. Please use coriander instead of parsley. Trust me when I say you will love it.

How to make 3 ingredient naan bread with yogurt (no yeast)?

  • In a bowl, mix all the ingredients.
  • To make a soft dough, thoroughly knead.
  • Once covered, allow it to rest for thirty.
  • Now chop up some coriander and garlic. Add it to the melted butter and keep it aside.
  • Now divide the naan dough into 60-gram roundels. This recipe yields 8 naans, so divide it into 8 roundels. I have used a weighing scale, and you can eyeball it too.
  • Now, cover the roundels and keep them aside. This ensures no skin formation due to the moisture drying out from the dough.
  • Dunk one round in flour and place it on the chakla. Start rolling to create a roughly triangular shape. Restaurants usually serve naans this way, and it is up to you to shape it anyway. If you suck at making circles, make any shape resembling a circle.
  • Meanwhile, heat a nonstick tawa.
  • Some recipes will tell you to sprinkle water. Trust me when I say you don’t need to.
  • Just place the naan bread. It will start puffing up and cooking. Flip it over when one side is done to cook the other side.
  • Remove, brush the butter mix generously on both sides and then place it in a casserole to keep it fluffy.
  • Serve your naan bread with any dish of your choice.

Frequently Asked Questions about 3 ingredient naan bread with yogurt (no yeast)

Is it possible to substitute whole wheat flour for all-purpose flour?

Yes, you can use whole wheat flour as a substitute for all-purpose flour. However, remember that the texture and taste of the naan bread may be slightly different compared to all-purpose flour. Denser and heartier naan bread is typically produced using whole wheat flour. Whole wheat flour absorbs more water and hence would require a slightly higher amount of yogurt to knead the dough.

Is it necessary to use plain yogurt, or can I use flavored yogurt?

It is recommended to use plain yogurt for making a no-yeast naan recipe. The added sugars and flavors in flavored yogurts can change the bread’s flavor and texture. Plain yogurt provides a neutral base and allows you to control the flavor of the naan bread.

Can I substitute Greek yogurt for regular yogurt?

Indeed, you can use Greek yogurt instead of plain yogurt in the recipe for naan bread. However, Greek yogurt is typically thicker and tangier than regular plain yogurt. This may affect the consistency and taste of the final naan bread. You may need to adjust the amount of Greek yogurt or add a little water to achieve the desired dough consistency.

Do I need to let the dough rise like traditional yeast-based bread?

No, one of the advantages of making naan bread without yeast is that there is no need for the dough to rise. The baking powder helps provide the necessary leavening, making the bread puff up while cooking.

Can I add ingredients like garlic or herbs to the naan bread dough?

Absolutely! Add minced garlic, chopped parsley or cilantro, or spices like cumin or coriander to your naan bread to improve its flavor. Mix them into the dough before shaping and cooking the naan bread.

Can I make the naan bread ahead of time and reheat it later?

It is possible to prepare the naan bread in advance and reheat it as needed. The baked naan bread can be kept for up to two days at room temperature in an airtight container or zip-top bag. You can reheat it until thoroughly heated in the oven, microwave, or toaster before serving.

What are some popular accompaniments for naan bread?

Naan bread is often served with various dishes such as chicken butter masala or chicken tikka masala or even some dal preparations such as dal makhani. It can also be enjoyed with dips like hummus, tzatziki, or raita. Additionally, you can use naan bread as a base for sandwiches or wraps by filling it with vegetables, meats, or spreads of your choice.
