What equipment do I need to make a red velvet cake in a cup?
–A set of teaspoons and tablespoons
What ingredients do I need to make a red velvet cake in a cup?
Okay, so let’s start with some basics here. What is red velvet cake exactly?
Is it a red cake? Nope. It is a cake that has cocoa powder that reacts with the acids in the batter to create a red color. Some theories also suggest that it was beetroot juice that made the cakes red in color and also made it moist.
A good red velvet cake should have cocoa powder and an acid, usually buttermilk, for it to react with, to create that unique taste of red velvet.

Butter
Butter makes the cake hold good shape as well as adds flavor. I made a batch using oil, but I did not like it as much as the butter version. So, I decided to add butter.
Buttermilk
In this red velvet mug cake recipe, we made buttermilk from scratch so you don’t have to go and buy a whole bottle for just one recipe. Is this the same as the store-bought buttermilk? Technically, no. The store-bought buttermilk is the by-product of the process of churning butter or it is made by fermenting milk.
I made these no-egg red velvet cookies using a similar method wherein I add flavor using buttermilk. You can check it out here.
Flour
I used all-purpose flour to make this mug cake.
Honey
Honey is a naturally occurring sugar that adds flavor and moisture to the mug cake.
Food grade red color
You can use either water-based or gel-based colors. If you are not a fan of food colors, you can try this vanilla mug cake recipe with chocolate chips (it’s one of my popular recipes)
Baking powder
Baking powder can be added to make the cake rise. The batter has no other leavening agents, so you have to use an artificial leavening agent to make the cake rise. A leavening agent means something that will help the batter to rise up. The baking powder reacts with the liquid in the recipe to create air bubbles and carbon dioxide.
White chocolate chips
White chocolate chips are added for more texture and flavor. The batter is thin so the chocolate chips settle down at the base of the bowl or the mug.

How to make a red velvet cake in a cup?
Pre-prep for the red velvet mug cake recipe:
Let’s make buttermilk first, heat the milk for 10 seconds in the microwave to make it lukewarm.
Add the vinegar to the milk, stir, and leave it for five minutes.
Measure and sieve the cocoa powder and flour.
Melt the butter and keep aside.
Making the batter:
In the mug, add melted butter followed by the honey.
Add milk and red color. I am using a gel-based food color so 1 drop was enough. Gel-based food colors require a lesser amount and give a vibrant color to your mug cake.
Give it a mix using a whisk. Should I put it on a T-shirt already??? Excuse me, as I make one for myself first.
Okay, I’m back. Add the dry ingredients and chocolate chips. Mix well with a whisk.
Now clean the edges of the bowl. Why? Just so that the cake can rise evenly from all sides and there is no interference in that process.
Baking the red velvet cake in a mug:
Place the mug on a microwave-safe plate to avoid wastage in case the cake spills out of the mug while baking. We have all been there.
Bake it for 1 minute in the highest setting of your microwave. Do the traditional skewer test.
If it comes out clean, your mug cake is ready.
Garnish with a dollop of whipped cream or ice cream or icing sugar. I chose whipped cream because I get sore throat easily from ice cream but you can add a dollop. You can also make some cream cheese frosting and add it. I have a cream cheese-from-scratch recipe, you can check it out here.

Frequently Asked Questions:
How to make red velvet mug cake without vinegar?
It is very easy, all you have to do is buy a bottle of buttermilk and use it instead of making your own buttermilk from scratch.
How to make red velvet mug cake without milk?
I would suggest using yogurt, but in case you are lactose intolerant, then you cannot use yogurt.
How to make red velvet mug cake with egg?
I made a red velvet cake recipe using eggs that bakes in just 5 minutes!! Check it out here.
I didn’t stop there, nope, I also made a chocolate cake for you which also bakes in just 5 minutes and you will want to bake it this weekend.
Anddd, because I love you so much, I also have this insanely easy blender Oreo cake that also bakes in 6 minutes.
How to store it?
I would eat it in one go, but you can place a lid and store it in the refrigerator. Also if you loved this you have to bake my red velvet cake in 5 minutes next because it’s amazing!
Is white chocolate chips optional?
Yes, you can even add any nuts or dark chocolate chips.
Will the baking time vary?
Honestly, yes it may vary but by 15 seconds. However, remember, in microwave baking 15 seconds is a lot.
Can I reheat it?
No, reheating makes the mug cake more dry and chewy.
Is this a kid-friendly recipe?
Absolutely, make sure an adult opens the door after it is baked because the microwave will have a lot of steam. Open the door a little to let the steam out and then take the cake out wearing oven mitts. This Funfetti Mug cake is another kid’s favorite recipe that you can bake next!
Can I double the recipe?
Yes, you can but make sure you are making it in two cups else there are high chances that your cake won’t cake evenly.
