What equipment do I require to make cheese and potato pie with onion?
A set of teaspoons and tablespoons:
This stainless-steel measuring spoon set is durable and perfect for measuring dry ingredients. I use the one that my pastry college provided to me. I did use the plastic ones, but let me tell you, yes, they may look boring, but stainless steel is best for long-term and safe use.
Big Bowl:
I use a big bowl because it reflects the light when I shoot videos, and you also get to see all the ingredients. It can also be used in the microwave.
Baking Dish:
I have used a ceramic dish here which is oven-safe and air fryer safe.
Balloon Whisk:
Use this Balloon Whisk to whisk the egg before adding it to the mashed potatoes.
Spatula:
I believe this one tool here is essential to scrape your bowl clean so that you have to do less work cleaning. This one here does the job perfectly and is easy to use, heat resistant. What more do you want out of a spatula, right?
Saucepan:
To sauté the onions and garlic.
Chef’s Knife:
A set of good chef knives is essential on your culinary journey. Here is the knife that I use.
What ingredients are required to make Air fryer mashed potatoes?
Potatoes
I have used good quality potatoes that are available in the Indian market, basically also called the Chandramukhi type, just in case you need the name for reference. Potatoes are starchy which is why they are very important in this dish, once cooked they provide a smooth and velvety texture. You need to make sure that you do not over-mash it, just mash it enough so that all the lumps are removed and a smooth texture is obtained.
Butter
Butter provides creaminess and richness in the recipe. It helps in creating a rich mouthfeel and enhances the texture of the mashed potatoes, so don’t shy away from using butter generously.
Dijon Mustard
Dijon mustard is used in a very small quantity which helps add contrast to its tangy flavor and also helps cut down the creaminess a bit. You could use it as per your taste preference, I have used a teaspoon of it here.
Smoked English Cheddar
Smoked Cheddar Cheese enhances the savory flavor of the dish and makes it more yummy, and since we are gratinating the top (browning the top layer) of the cheese it will add a beautiful smoked cheesy flavor along with a beautiful golden crust. I have used this cheese however you can also use processed or parmesan cheese.
Egg
The egg acts as a binding agent and also provides some moisture to our mashed potatoes. Make sure you whisk the egg before adding it to the mashed potatoes. The egg is cooked very well so do not worry about your mashed potatoes giving off that eggy smell.
Milk
Milk provides a rich and creamy consistency to the mashed potatoes along with the butter. The milk fat contributes in providing moisture to the dish and also helps with the texture of the mashed potatoes.
Salt
Salt helps season the dish and enhances the flavor of the mashed potatoes.
Onion
I have added onions to enhance the flavor of the creamy air fryer mashed potatoes. The sauteed and caramelized onions will add some depth and complement the mashed potatoes.
Garlic
I have added garlic as an additional flavor to the mashed potatoes. Bits and pieces of golden crisp garlic when they come in each spoonful will make the mashed potatoes more yummy and flavorful.
Chilli flakes
Chilli flakes will provide subtle heat and spiciness to the mashed potatoes without overpowering the overall flavor. You can adjust the chilli as per your preference as it will get mild while cooking.
Refined Oil
Refined oil is used to sauté the onion and garlic. Go ahead and use any neutral-flavored oil for this.

Steps to make air fryer mashed potatoes:
Boiling the potatoes
Wash the potatoes thoroughly and do not remove the peel. This ensures that the natural flavors and nutrients are intact.
Boil the potatoes until they are tender, you can check the tenderness by gently piercing the potato with a fork. It should take about 20-30 minutes for your potatoes to be fully cooked.
This also depends on the size of the potatoes. If the potatoes are medium sized they should get done in the given time. Once done, allow them to cool and keep aside for peeling later.
Sauté the garlic and onions
Now in a pan add 2 tbsp of refined oil and add the chopped onions. Sauté it, till it becomes shiny and has a caramelized texture.
Once the onions are done, remove them and keep them aside.
While you are still preparing the other ingredients ensure that you preheat your air fryer or oven to 180 degrees Celsius (356 degrees Fahrenheit).
Now in the same pan add some oil if required and sauté the chopped garlic, once they are crispy and golden brown, remove and keep them aside.
Since the potatoes should be cooled by now, carefully peel them and add the peeled potatoes in a big bowl. Use a fork or a potato masher to mash the potatoes till they acquire a creamy and smooth texture, ensuring there are no lumps. This makes sure that the texture is smooth once the dish is finally prepared.
Mixing the ingredients
Since the potatoes are now mashed to a smooth creamy consistency, it’s now time to add the remaining ingredients which will make this dish more flavorful.
Add a generous amount of butter to the mashed potatoes. Butter will help give your potatoes a creamy velvety texture. These steps just make my mouth water but I need to be patient and wait a little more before I enjoy the final dish, haha….
Add in a teaspoon of Dijon mustard which will give the creamy potatoes a slightly spicy and tangy flavor. zcxv
Crack and add the whisked egg and add the milk to the mixture, egg will bind everything together and add to the structure of the dish.
Add in the sauteed onion and garlic, with chili flakes to the mixture. Finally, add salt as per taste and mix all the ingredients to create a smooth and velvety texture.
Baking the Dish
In an oven-safe or an air fryer dish transfer the mashed potatoes mix.
Now generously layer your mashed potatoes with grated Smoked Cheddar Cheese. The Smoked Cheddar Cheese will elevate your mashed potatoes making it more flavorful and rich.
It’s now time to place the dish inside the preheated air fryer or oven. Bake the potatoes at 180 degrees Celsius (356 degrees Fahrenheit) for around 10 minutes. Keep an eye to check that the cheese does not turn too brown. The cheese should be slightly golden brown and slightly bubbly.
Once baked the top layer is golden brown. Remove the dish from the air fryer or oven.
Allow it to cool for some time before serving and enjoy the delicious smoked cheese mashed potatoes with a delightful and creamy golden interior and perfectly crisped and browned cheese topping.
Frequently Asked Questions about making cheese and potato pie:
Can I use any type of potatoes for making Creamy Air Fryer Mashed Potatoes, or is there a specific variety recommended?
I have used good quality potatoes that are easily available in the Indian market, specifically known as Chandramukhi potatoes.
What is the purpose of the Dijon mustard in this recipe, and can I omit it if I don’t have any on hand?
Since potatoes in themselves are starchy and bland, I have added some flavors to this recipe like onion, garlic, and Dijon mustard. Dijon mustard cuts the creaminess a bit and adds a hint of tangy and spicy flavor which compliments the mashed potatoes well. You can skip adding this if you don’t have this handy.
Can I use a different type of cheese instead of smoked English cheddar, and how will it affect the flavor?
Yes, the ideal substitutes would be processed cheese or parmesan cheese. Every cheese has its own distinct flavor so yes it will effect the flavor of the recipe. I used smoked English cheddar cheese because of its unique flavor and the way it compliments the creaminess of potatoes in this recipe. Please refrain from using ricotta or feta cheese as this will alter the flavor a lot more and is not ideal.
Is the egg used as a binding agent, or does it serve another purpose in the pie?
Yes it is used as a binding agent and also provides moisture, creaminess and richness to our creeamy air fryer mashed potatoes.
Can I use a non-dairy milk substitute instead of regular milk, such as almond milk or soy milk?
Yes, you can use a non-dairy milk substitute. The best ones would be Almond milk or Soy milk. Since we also need to maintain the richness see if you can get your hands on or make at-home cashew milk.

You can add salt as per your requirements and adjust it as per your taste preferences.
What size baking dish should I use for baking Creamy Air Fryer Mashed Potatoes, and should it be greased beforehand?
You can use any baking dish that you have, I’ve used a small round 6-inch baking dish.
Why are the onions and garlic sautéed separately instead of together?

Yes, you can adjust the number of chili flakes as per your taste and heat preferences.
How long does it take to boil the potatoes with the jacket, and should they be fully cooked before mashing?
