Shrikhand is a Gujrati- Maharashtrian sweet dish. It is made using hung curd flavored with some cardamom and a color derived from saffron. Shrikhand is the only dessert the Indian cuisine that is served with something savory. It is enjoyed with hot puris. However, it’s also served as it is as a dessert.

In this recipe, I decided to replace the cardamom with some nutmeg.

What ingredients do I need to make a mango shrikhand/ amrakhand recipe?

The base of this dessert is the hung curd. Curd with all it’s whey drained out is very thick and creamy. If you feel, that yogurt and shrikhand are the same, that is not at all true. Shrikhand is so much more than that.

You will also need icing sugar and mango puree to add sweetness and flavor. I have used some saffron for color.

You will also need nutmeg powder for flavor and to enhance the sweetness of mango puree and sugar.

The dry fruits bring a fresh change in the texture and flavor of the palate. I used chopped-up pistachios, almonds, and cashew nuts.

How to make a mango shrikhand/ amrakhand recipe?

  1. Weigh the curd and place it in a muslin cloth. Tie the muslin cloth and hang it from some height. Keep a bowl underneath to collect the liquid that would drip down.
  2. Soak the dry fruits in some water.
  3. Take 6 tbsp of milk and place the saffron in it.
  4. After two hours, your hung curd will be ready to use.
  5. Chop up some mangoes and blend till you get a puree. Add the icing sugar and nutmeg powder and blend till well combined. Adjust the sweetness if you prefer sweeter shrikhand.
  6. Now mix this with the hung curd and add the soaked dry fruits and the saffron to the shrikhand.
  7. Mix till creamy and let it chill in the refrigerator for about an hour.
  8. Serve and enjoy!

  1. The hung curd should not have any liquid in it and should be thick.
  2. To add nutmeg powder. just grate the nutmeg.
  3. Add sugar-free or stevia instead of sugar if you are looking for a sugar-free option.

  • Hung curd: 600 gm (curd) gives approximately 250 gm of hung curd
  • Icing sugar/ powdered sugar: 60 gm
  • Nutmeg powder: 3/4 tsp
  • Mango puree: 150 gm
  • Kesar/ Saffron-: 14 strands
  • Dry fruits: a handful of nuts of your choice (Pistachio, almonds, cashew)
Directions
  • Step 1 Weigh the curd and place in a muslin cloth. Tie the muslin cloth and hang it from some height. Keep a bowl underneath to collect the liquid that would drip down.
